On November 20, 1820 the the American whaler, Essex from Nantucket Mass, was attacked and sunk by a Sperm whale in the Southern Pacific, thousands of miles off the coast of South America.
Captain George Pollard and his crew of 20 were forced to make for land in the whaleboats.
What follows is a harrowing tale of dehydration, starvation and cannibalism.
Accounts of the ordeal were later written by First Mate, Owen Chase and Cabin Boy, Thomas Nickerson and later inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick.
